Work that
means something.

Work+Play Hub's team may be small, but we have a very large purpose. Whether you're applying for a role or offering your time as a volunteer — every person who joins us helps prove that a better system is possible.

We are building something that has never been built before in Scotland.

Work+Play Hub is Scotland's first fully integrated coworking and early years hub. We are a registered Scottish charity, a Stephen Lloyd Awards finalist, a City of Edinburgh Council partner, and a team that genuinely believes in what we're doing.

We are a small organisation in an early stage of growth. That means the roles are real, the impact is visible, and the people around you are motivated by purpose rather than profit.

We are committed to being a Living Wage employer and to building a team that reflects the community we serve.

About the role

Work+Play Hub is looking for an experienced, qualified, and deeply committed Senior Early Years Practitioner to join our small but growing team. This is a rare opportunity to work in Scotland's first fully integrated coworking and early years hub — a model that exists nowhere else.

You will lead our Froebelian crèche, working directly with children aged 0–5 in a play-based environment developed in partnership with the University of Edinburgh's Froebelian Futures Programme. You will also play a key role in shaping our early years provision as we grow.

What you'll be doing

  • Leading and delivering high-quality play sessions for children aged 0–5
  • Ensuring the crèche environment reflects Froebelian principles — child-led, natural materials, holistic development
  • Maintaining all regulatory requirements including Care Inspectorate standards
  • Supporting and mentoring other practitioners and apprentices
  • Building warm, trusting relationships with parents and children
  • Contributing to the development of our early years programme as the hub grows
  • Maintaining accurate records and safeguarding documentation

What we're looking for

  • A relevant early years level 9 qualification (HNC Early Education & Childcare or above, or equivalent), or working towards it
  • SSSC registration or eligibility to register
  • Experience working with children aged 0–5 in a professional setting
  • Knowledge of or genuine interest in Froebelian methodology
  • A PVG certificate or willingness to obtain one
  • Warmth, reliability, and a genuine belief in the importance of child-led free play
  • Ability to work flexibly within a small, mission-driven team

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Experience with or training in Froebelian methodology
  • Experience in a community or charity setting
  • Interest in the wider mission of Work+Play Hub — supporting working parents

About volunteering with us

Volunteers are the essential lifeblood of any charity. Your help allows us to carry out our mission and support the community — and we wholeheartedly welcome your involvement.

We are a small team doing a lot. If you have expertise you are willing to share — even for a few hours a month — you can have a real impact on what we are able to build. All ages welcome!

Areas we need support with

  • Communications & social media — content creation, community management, copywriting
  • Grant writing & fundraising — researching funders, drafting applications, reporting
  • Finance & accounting — bookkeeping, financial reporting, budget support
  • Legal — charity law, employment, contracts, GDPR compliance
  • Digital & web — website maintenance, SEO, digital marketing
  • HR & recruitment — policies, processes, compliance support
  • Event coordination — supporting our workshops and community events
  • Photography & video — capturing the hub in action
  • Research — impact measurement, policy analysis, sector research
  • Early years — qualified practitioners able to support sessionally

What we ask of volunteers

  • A genuine interest in Work+Play Hub's mission
  • Reliability — we are a small team and we depend on the commitments people make
  • Willingness to obtain a PVG if your role involves contact with children or vulnerable adults
  • That's it — we work around you, not the other way around
